Smurf/'Blue Face' Issue When Taking Screenshots in VLC

I recently installed Windows 7, and then the most recent drivers for my NVIDIA GEForce 8400 video card. I had installed more recent versions of VLC but then I'm dealing with this graininess/pixelation issue (this as well, so I downgraded to one of the 0.8 versions. That didn't work at all (I had a black screen, just audio), so I went back to the most recently release.
Since then, I've been having the "blue face" issue but only when I take screenshots. It's slightly aggravating and I have gone through every single post here that my search turned up, and the only thing that fixed it was using DirectX video output, but then it turns off Aero and not only does the basic Windows 7 theme slightly lag my PC, it's annoying have the theme swap on and off each time I want to watch something (as well as the graininess) -- it seems I can either have no screen cap capabilities and have proper video (Open GL output) or graininess and proper screenshots (Direct X output).
Is there a fix, or should I just find a new player?
Stats:
Windows 7, latest graphics drivers for NVIDIA GEForce 8400 graphics card. VLC version 1.0.2
Much thanks.
