fast forwarding & rewinding .mkv problem

hi,
so, there is a problem with some mkv files, when i try to fast forward or rewind, it just starts the movie either from the beginning or some random place close to beginning. sometimes removing the sound.
tried on both mac os x (10.5.6/10.5.
and win xp sp2. vlc version doesn't seem to matter, tried 1.0.2, 1.0.1, 0.9.6 and some other older versions.
but, media player cassic in windows easily does what i want. (can't try with any other player on mac due to the lack of them xD)
file is 1280x720 h.264. vlc's media information says codec is avc1. does have subtitles
can provide the file if needed.
