Newbie question, how to close a file?

I just installed the latest version of VLC and have been playing around with it. There doesn't seem to be any way to close a file without exiting VLC, at least I can't figure out how.

Here's how I open files, Open Media>Open File>Add a file>Play. When it's done I would like to close the file without exiting VLC. Is this possible? I've tried deleting the file from the list, but that didn't work.

Thanks in advance. :)

What do you mean with "closing a file"?
VLC's interface resemsbles a CD player. If you want to stop a file from playing, hit the STOP button (has a grey rectangle on it). With PAUSE you pause (two vertical lines).
