Problems playing DVB-S captured MPEG

Postby tafkap » 26 Nov 2003 09:37

I do often capture MPEG video from my satellite card. The resulting mpegs play perfectly with pretty all players I've installed. Even on Linux mplayer has no problems with it.

However VLC Media Player only plays the sound, not the video. This happens on Windows as well as on Linux.

On Linux I'm confused about this, since I assumed VLC uses the same codecs as mplayer does.

Can anyone explain this?

Thanks,
t.

The messages output looks pretty much like this and is continously printed:

main warning: late picture skipped (266014051)
main warning: late picture skipped (266014074)
libmpeg2 warning: invalid picture encountered
libmpeg2 warning: invalid picture encountered
libmpeg2 warning: invalid picture encountered
main warning: late picture skipped (266139717)
main warning: late picture skipped (266139739)
libmpeg2 warning: invalid picture encountered
libmpeg2 warning: invalid picture encountered
libmpeg2 warning: invalid picture encountered
....

This is the same for Windows as well as for Linux.

Does this help?

Is VLC using a different mpeg decoder than mplayer?

Why do other players work?

Thanks,

Same problem here, roo

Postby Yoda » 26 Dec 2003 17:43

I have the same problem here. A friend has given me a cd with mpegs he captured using his DVB-S card. None of them are working the way i want:
In VLC, i get the sound, but not the video. In windows media player, i get the video but not the sound. And in winamp (which should behave like wmplayer, or?), i only get the sound, too. strange, eh?
The vlc message window gives me the same errors and warnings as above. I'm using version 0.6.2 but will try a newer version now...

If this still doesn't work then I would definitely be interested in small samples of your files.

I would assume these recording where probably done with my theatre 3. and later . I see the same problem it seams that the program stream header is a bit currupt on some of mine if you remux it or run it through a mpeg_vcr GOP fixer it normal plays fine afterwards.

Ok, meanwhile I found a fix for it.

I do my recordings with DVBViewer and a SkyStar2 DVB card (That's what I always did. I never used theatre 3).
DVBViewer supports the PVA output format. I always used the PS output format. Now I switched to PVA.

After remuxing it via PVAStrumento and the makePS command, it plays fine with VLC.

I also noticed, that already recorded MPG files can be 'fixed' somehow using ProjectX output 'TS'. The resulting .ts file can be renamed to .mpg and plays as well in VLC.

Regards,
klaus.
