.WAV file won't play in 1.0.1 for Intel on Mac OS 10.6.1

This file works fine on 0.9.8, but garbles on the new version. I didn't try VLC 1.0.1 on OSX 10.5 as only upgraded after moving to Snow Leopard. iTunes fails similarly, which is why I am using VLC. Does anyone know a solution? I'm depending on an old recorder (2004 Pentax Optio S4i)) for classroom purposes (learning Chinese). File codec characteristics are Codec=ms, Language=blank, Type=audio, Channels=1, Sample rate=8000Hz, Bits per sample=4, Bitrate=32kb/s.
