Audio dropout when starting another application

I'm using VLC 0.8.1 to play audio on a P4/1.4ghz/1gb/W2k system. When I have a file playing and start Mozilla Firefox, I get a break in the output and the following log entries.

[00000271] main audio output warning: output PTS is out of range (71866), clearing ou
[00000271] main audio output warning: PTS is out of range (13135), dropping buffer
[00000271] main audio output warning: PTS is out of range (-9857), dropping buffer
[00000271] main audio output warning: PTS is out of range (-12711), dropping buffer
[00000271] main audio output warning: PTS is out of range (-35585), dropping buffer

It's a very consistent error that I can recreate with both .mp3 and .wav files.

I've tried running at a higher priority ("higer than normal"), but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Anything I can try to fix this.
