Basic playback question

I have just downloaded the VLC media player but cannot figure out how to play a movie with it. When I go into "Media" and then click "Open Folder" (to open the folder that contains the audio and video subfolders of the movie) it does open the movie (with sound and picture) but I then get the menu screen and am not able click on the menu choices (e.g. "Play", "Scene Selection" etc.). Can anyone tell me what the basic steps are to play a movie with VLC media player or direct me to a page on the website that has a description of the process? Thanks in advance for your help.
