iMac G5 and AC3 passthrough via optical out?

I have asked it before, but still haven't got satisfying answers.
1) i have tried everything, but got no 5.1 sound from my Yamaha RX-V340RDS receiver. All i get is plain PCM stereo. I suppose it is a bug in vlc. Apple DVD player is only player that streams 5.1 from DVDs. I read that problems started with 10.3+, but can't confirm it.
2) is this problem dealt with?

We don't have the knowledge to fix these problems. Find us a CoreAudio developer.

That error doesn't seem to have anything to do with CoreAudio...

I am not sure if they are still required but. Perhaps a post or email to the whamb project would be a good idea
http://www.whamb.com/?
just trying to help, PS G5's do not have audio from VLC this really needs to be looked into. Maybe they can help?

VLC needs coreaudio developers to look into this. We lack the knowledge and the equipment to test these things.

Whamb Is an audio program which takes full advantage of core audio, my guess would be that someone working on Whamb would have programming expertise which may be useful in resolving these issues.
