Can't watch any film or videos on VLC!

Hello to all
First thanks to all the developers of this program. I'm looking forward to enjoy 100%!
The problem I have is that I havent been able to use it. Every time I try to play a film (mainly the ones I download as flv format, stop five or ten minutes after they start. The same happen with any DVD!
I see people use strange programming language here. My knowledge about this kind of things is pretty basic (and I really mean BASIC) so please when reply, try to use a language I can understand. Sorry, I'm not trying to be fuzzy, but I really want to resolve this matter. My little daughter gets so frustrated every time we download a movie from the Internet and try to played, it wont work.
Am I missing something? Do I need to download something?
