The subtitle files can not appear in VLC 0.62.
and how do i know how the subtitle text is encoded?

my OS is Win2k SP4.

Did you try VLC 0.7.0 ?

Not encoded. All text uses a character encoding. which is a set of characters. Japanese uses different characters than european which again is different from Hebrew etc etc.
