Hello, I hope that you will excuse me if this is not in the correct forum. I have had a look and felt it the most appropriate place for this topic.
I have a netgear eva700 media player. I have used Eyeconnect media server software to wirelessly stream video to the television via the Netgear box. However Eyeconnect is a bit restrictive in the file types it handles as well as other issues like it costs once the trial period is over.
I would like to find out if VLC can do the same job as Eyeconnect and that is to stream wirelessly to my Netgear eva700. I have been trying to do this but am not sure regards the settings etc. I have tried using the VLC streaming wizard but to no avail.
If anyone has any suggestions then I'd really appreciate it.
I am using a G5 Powermac and a netgear wireless router and an existing wireless network which worked well using the Eyeconnect media server software.

What does this Netgear thing know to read?

According to the manual these are the formats its supports:

What protocol?

The manual states that it uses DHCP to obtain an IP address. Is this what you mean?

No. What protocol does it accept for streaming? HTTP? RTSP ?

Sorry but its not my strongest area of understanding. I've read through the manual and it mentions in the Technical Specifications that the Data and Routing Protocols are TCP/IP and DHCP. Is this what I am looking for?

For the second time, we don't care about the network and transport protocol. Those are taken care of by the operating system.

From VLC side, the issue is with the application layer. If you cannot tell us which protocols are used, then we cannot answer your question.

Excuse me for my lack of understanding. I am a bit of a novice at this. In order to assist me in improving my understanding then it would be good if you could give me some indication as to what I should be looking for in trying to find the correct protocol. The eyeconnect software manual mentions UPnP when discussing the wired and wireless connection between it and the media player. As this worked when using the eyeconnect and the netgear box then I hope that this is what I am looking for and what you may need to know what it is I am trying to achieve. I appreciate your patience and tolerance of my ignorance. I shall be very very grateful if you had any insight into this setup.

Don't suppose its possible that a wee hint or bit of guidance could aid my understanding of the situation regards what the protocol might be? I'd really appreciate any assistance. Cheers

There is some support for UPnP AV (receive only) in VLC 1.0 using the Intel UPnP stack for POSIX systems (basically all except Windows). It's in Media / Services Discovery / UPnP.
