Using VLC to convert MKV to AVI

I'm totally new to using VLC. I stumbled upon it in searching for a solution to convert some MKV files to AVI files.

I get a lot of bad blockiness or frame loss running MKV files on my computer (it's a junker), so I wanted to convert them to AVI files, which always seem to run nicely.

I downloaded the VLC software, and in looking through the 'convert' section, I can't seem to find the AVI filetype anywhere.

Am I missing something?

Am I a noob?

Please help me. :-)

Moved to General VLC media player Troubleshooting.

VLC's AVI muxer (avi writer) is still broken AFAIK, however you could mux into e.g. MPEG-TS or MP4 instead (with the extensions .mpg or .mp4 respectively).

If you just want to re-save as an AVI try a tool such as Avidemux.
