How to check VLC is recording a stream - command line

I am using a .bat file to send info to VLC to record a radio stream.

Sometimes VLC stops streaming and thus recording - I presume cause the internet connection is broken but I suppose it could be for many reasons.

Is there a command line function that returns true or some way to test that VLC is downloading the stream?
