Buffering in vlc 0.4.1

hi all,
I'm working on a project in which i use vlms to provide a multicast stream to a number of clients running vlc 0.4.1 - ideally I'd like to use a newer version of the client to stream and receive, but I'm working on FreeBSD and i've spent a few days trying to build version 0.6 on FreeBSD without success (or, at least a version that builds *and* can play a file!)
I'm finding that the stream I receive has a number of jitters. Is it possible to manually set the udp receive buffer in vlc 0.4.1? I know this is possible in the latest version of vlc using -udp-caching, but this doesn't work in 0.4.1. I presume that there is some buffering going on somewhere in the client - can anyone suggest where I might find this in the source code so that I can hard code a higher value?
Or, has anyone managed to get a later version working on FreeBSD?
Many thanks,
Phil.
