I installed VLC Player 0.8.0 and there was no video when i tryed to watch anything. I checked if the video track was disabled and it was so i put it to track 1 (the only track on most of my media) and then where the video should be there was just a black picture the size of what the video should have been.

So i installed the latest direct x and that fixed it. But i tried to play somethnig today and the same thing happened. So i uninstalled it and installed 0.8.1 and nothing has changed. What's going on?

First, good job on current DirectX. The other good thing is to specifically check with the manufacturer of your graphics chip or board, get their latest drivers. (for example, my PC is made by a major US vendor, integrated Intel graphics -- turns out that Intel had an update that the PC vendor didn't list)

Try deleting vlcrc , if it exists on your system -- it's in c:\documents and settings\your_username\application data\vlc. Sometimes you get a bad setting in the initialization file.

If that doesn't work:
Launch VLC, then open Settings -- Preferences, select the Advanced Options checkbox.

In the left pane of the window, open Modules -- video output -- vout_directx.

Try selecting the middle box -- "Use video buffers...", press Save, then close and restart VLC.

If that doesn't work, go back into DirectX settings, turn off the top and bottom checkboxes (YUV-RGB and triple buffering), Save and restart.

Thanks for the help i really apprieciate it. I went into the settings - preference.... and changed the settings and that got it working. Once again thanks. It was really starting to pi$$ me off. Later.

Ok so i just realised that with this comes a discoloration. Here is a print screen of how it plays (top) and a picture of what it should actually look like (bottom).

Is there some other setting that can fix this?

If you're using the wxwindows interface, select Settings -- Extended GUI. That opens a section with a video correction area -- standard hue/contrast kins of things.

Problem with mine, though, is that instead of having ANY kind of video in my windows client, i have NONE AT ALL.

It's just a big grey area the shade of the gui for the rest of the program.

I know i'm probably missing codecs. I'm trying to run an .mkv file and when it boots up the video is set to disabled. However when i set it to video track 1 there isn't any difference at all.

If it's only that video that plays bad, others are OK, then indeed it's a video codec that VLC doesn't support -- nothing you can do to change that. If it's all videos, then try the other things suggested in this thread, like checking the "Use system memory"...option.

The picture is still not colored right, and I can't get all the colors to show up even while messing with the video settings in extended GUI.

Is there anything else that will make the picture's color normal and allow video to show up too?

Afraid there really are only a handful of things, absolutely standard:
-Latest DirectX
-Latest graphics card drivers (check with the graphics chip vendor, such as Intel or whoever, not just the PC manufacturer)
-Try switching on the "Use system memory..." option (really, just relates to if you see no video)
-Switch off the "Use overlay" option (again, only for a no-video case, pretty much used if you are trying to drive two displays simultaneously, like an analog-out TV interface)
-The built-in VLC video controls (hue, contrast,...)

Already done all of those, except the "use system memory". Where is this, so that maybe it will solve the color problem, and the lag problem.

All of a sudden I am having the NO VIDEO problem as well....?? VLC has worked just fine for ages..now black screen.....

I had the same problem (no menus either). I almost got openGL to work, but then something strange happened. My refresh rate changed from my normal 85 to 75. I don't know how it happened, but it did. Now VLC works very well at 24-bit 1024x768. I also updated my graphics drivers before that, but I think that the refresh rate is the key to this issue.

I don't undersatand...all of a sudden, after using vlc for ages, I have this no video problem...tried all the suggestions above, nothing helps...full sound...black screen!!??

Help....please...I'm at a loss here...I can extract the .dat from the bins and watch the movies with BS Player, but I cannot watch anything with VLC...completely black.

OK, well nothing worked so I wiped vlc from my hard drive, downloaded the zip package (the installer exe didn't work) and restarted.....now everything is fine.....phew....

Using the OpenGL Video Output setting fixed my color right up...WOOHOO!!

You're XP? OpenGL ought not have anything to do with your video -- it's directx under Windows.

Try deleting vlcrc first -- c:\documents and settings\your_username\application data\vlc\ is where it' s located. That's a hidden folder, but does exist if you've ever made any changes to the vlc settings. A simple thing is to open a command prompt (DOS box), cut and paste the following:

erase "c:\documents and settings\mfm\application data\vlc\vlcrc"

Where "mfm" is replaced by whatever your username is. Otherwise use the "Reset All" button on the Preferences page.

For a black frame, no video, the "classic" problem is needing to tell VLC to Use system memory, down in preferences -- modules -- video output -- vout_directx (turn on Advanced preferences, select the middle checkbox).

You could also try clearing the other two checkboxes on that page, though it shouldn't be the issue.

Press Save, then Exit VLC and restart it, see if that helps.

The other thing, though it would be a bit odd, is to open preferences -- general settings -- video, clear the "overlay video output" box, Save, exit VLC, restart.

I'm XP (and using the windows setting) and my color was screwed up...I checked off the OpenGL Video Output setting, saved and okay'd...corrected my color problem.

XP or not...seems to me as though your statement is not entirely true.

My error -- learn something new every day. (So focused on DirectX that I forgot OpenGL did anything)
