rawdv resolution off

I am seeming to have an odd problem with playing raw dv files captured with dvgrab. The resolution within vlc is 720x480, but within mplayer the resolution is 872x480. Here is a side by side with mplayer and vlc of a video with graphic paper. You can see that the mplayer resolution is correct, (the boxes are still square).
Any insight would be appreciated.
