Distorted/Frozen Issue

i've been having a problem with pretty much all .AVI files i've come across. First, when i first open the .avi file, the video becomes distorted(bunch of weird colors), but the audio is fine. After a few seconds the picture becomes normal. This also happens when i skip through the video using the bar. Except when i skip through the video and play it, the picture freezes along with the distortion. The sound continues playing and everything goes back to normal within a few seconds. It doesn't seem like a big issue but it becomes really annoying when your looking for a certain part of a video and its doing this. lol

And i've tried this both a mac and my dell(windows xp) so i don't think the OS is a problem. Has anyone experienced this and know a solution?
