portable vs. desktop vlc

Hi,
I'm pretty impressed with VLC and have it on my desktop computer at home and can play video from the web by opening network (under the tab media) and pasting in the url of the video I want. I installed portable vlc on a flash drive, hoping to replicate this, but when I try to play video on the portable version, I can't seem to get it to work. The video seems to start to play and the url shows in the playlist but then ends abruptly after a second or so. Is there something I'm overlooking in the portable version to be able to play video from the web?
