AVI file won't open (Error: Mpeg_system)

Hi,
I'm running on Mac OSX and have a VLC Version 0.7.2.
Whenever I try to open a certain avi file, I get the error message:
"mpeg_system: unable to determine stream type"
after which the movie will close. The name of the file in question ends in ".DivX-zr.avi" but downloading (various) Divx codecs has not solved the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.
