mp3 metadata

Hello
I downloaded Ghostly Swim and edited the metadata for the mp3s using Windows Explorer Properties. Now they won't play in VLC. Codec Details are also empty and Statistics show a 0 (Zero) for all values. They work in aTunes and Kmplayer just fine and the metadata such as track number are visible to Kmplayer. I unzipped the songs again and viewed the song info under Tools>Media Information in VLC and it shows Title, Artist, Album, Track Number and Year. However this info isn't available when I right click on the song in Explorer and select properties. I've checked other mp3s that play fine in every player and the metadata in VLC differs from Explorer Properties.
The primary concern for me is that I often use aTunes to organize and play music and it uses metadata to sort the songs and artists and it's very fussy. If all is not done just right it throws songs from the same Album/Artist all over the place
Is this a bug or is it fixable? Also is there a program that lets me edit the metadata for mp3s so they work fine in all players?
Thanks
