Video OUtput Freezes after a minute or so.

I just downloaded VLC version 9.8 for windows, and I've noticed a very apparent problem: the video freezes almost constantly. FOr some reason, even thought he video freezes, sound will continue, and I have to close and restart the program, as moving to a different segment of the video will not stop the problem. The average time it takes for this error to occur is about a minute and twenty seconds, although I've had it go from as short as nine seconds all the way up to five and a half minutes before freezing. Does this problem sound familiar to anybody?
