can't even get started

Postby lucky09 » 09 Mar 2009 00:43

I downloaded vlc 0.9.08a and have used it only as a viewer. But I recently read that a conversion or stream option is available included with program.

On-line I read where it describes about how to use vlc converting, there are picture inserts of what the screen should look like. mine does not look anything like it.
when i open vlc....I don't get the proper bar across the top with file and other options.
I get media,audio,video,playback,playlist,tools and help. it plays just fine but nothing else.

i think i have downloaded the correct file...so what am i doing wrong? could i be missing some required file on my computer?

The images in the tutorials/documentation you refer to are probably for the older wxWidgets interface. The new default interface is Qt4, hence is different, and has a different layout.

Go to "Media >> Convert / Save...", select your media, and then press the "Convert / Save" button. That should take you to the "Stream Output" window where you can then apply the information from e.g. the Streaming using the GUI section in the Streaming HowTo as seen here:
http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation: ... ng_the_GUI

Cheers, Arite.

Arite.
gee thanks. your instructions helped a lot. i printed off the instructions also.

i was able to select my media, .flv file, set parameters in stream window to a wma media.

i did get a file created but it had an extension .ps.
at first it would not open for me, then i tried open with windows media viewer and even tho i got a warning that not all may be right, I still
opened it and was able to view it.

what kind of file is this ".ps" and can I convert it to a more accepted and recognized format.

*.ps would be for MPEG-PS. For a WMV/WMA output choose e.g. "ASF/WMV" as the "Encapsulation format". Then when entering the destination filename enter the extension too (such as "C:\OUT.asf" or "C:\OUT.wmv").

hi Arite,
have a bit of problem again... i followed the process and it seems to work well.
the following is what I did:
stream screen:
enscapulation = asf/wmv
video = wmv1 (no difference wmv1 or wmv2)
audio = wma

when done the video plays green in beginning and as quail move around the green clears away and the correct shrub background appears.

I tried mpeg for video –
I tried mpeg for audio –
I even tried stream all elementary streams

What have I done wrong?

Try H-263 (XviD) or MPEG-4 for the video, e.g. MP3 for the audio and put in a MPEG-TS (*.mpg) or MP4 (*.mp4) encapsulation format (container).

As for the green screen at the beginning.. that suggests a missing/broken initial keyframe.

thanks for your help again...
this keyframe which is missing/broken....what is this...
should I try to download it again from youtube or is it something else i can try to fix.

would be nice if there was a place where one could read all about various terms and what they mean.
