Automatic subtitles and aspect-ratio for all media

Postby jbrown96 » 23 Feb 2009 01:06

I'm using VLC 0.9.4 on Ubuntu 8.10, and the VLC Remote Application from the iTunes store.

I have an htpc attached to my widescreen tv. The mouse and keyboard I have aren't very good, and I would rather not use them at all. I found this cool application for my iphone that uses the HTTP remote interface in VLC. Everything works relatively nicely; however, I would like to change VLC's default behavior. A lot of my videos have subtitles and are in a non-16:9 aspect-ratio. I generally don't care about preserving the aspect-ratio and never want subtitles turned on. Is there a way to have VLC disable subtitles and change the aspect-ratio to 16:9 when it starts ANY media? I tried searching through the preferences menu, but didn't find anything that helpful.

Using the Qt4 (default) interface, to force the aspect-ratio to always be 16:9 go to:
Tools >> Preferences... >> (Select "All" for "show settings") >> Video

And enter 16:9 for the "Source aspect ratio". Press "Save".

To disable subtitles completely go to, in the Preferences:
Video >> Subtitles / OSD

And untick "Enable sub-pictures". Press Save. You might need to restart VLC after saving, then try a video etc.
