Program for OS X?

Hi there.

I was just wondering if there was a program for OS X that allows us to get a deep analysis of how a particular file is encoded. I used to have one for PC which made it a lot easier to diagnose what might be wrong with the playing of the file.

Reason I'm asking is I've had a lot of trouble playing some of the movies I have. Numerous ones have XviD and SVCD2DivX in the title but neither Quicktime or VLC will even touch the things, depsite my using the 3ivX file placed in the Quicktime library. Not sure what else I need, but when I do find out the file types/encoding it will make it a lot easier.

Also many mpgs and wmvs fail to play - I thought VLC could run those out of the box too.

Thanks for your time guys.
