conversion of avi file to mpeg

Hi, I converted an avi file to an mpeg 4 file using vlc and then burned the file onto a double layer dvd with idvd, but the audio is out of sync with the video when i play in the dvd player. I used MPEG-4 Video and Bitrate 1024 and MPEG 4 Audio with Bitrate 192... could it be a problem with these? ANy help will be greatly appreciated
