Transcoding problems

Whenever I try to rip the video from a DVD using VLC, VLC crashes. It can play the DVD, but once I set it to transcode, it won't do anything for about a minute, then it crashes. Before that, it would just give me the error that it could not open the transcoder, so I uninstalled and reinstalled and now I have this problem. Anyone able to help with this? Thanks!
