OS X: Unexpectedly Quit

On OS X using test 3, VLC still periodically displays an unexpectedly quit dialog, even though it ontinues to run.

When I'm using VLC 0.7.0 on a G3 iMac 600Mhz, 512mb ram, MacOSX10.3.2 Panther to watch VCDs I get an message saying that VLC unexpectedly quitted and asks if I want to send a crash report to Apple.

What's strange is that VLC didn't really crash and after I click send crash report to Apple or dismiss, VLC continues to play the VCDs.

I get the unexpectly quit message within the first 10 seconds of VCD movie playback when I start up VLC and play a VCD, and when I click dismiss or send crash report to Apple to close to Crash Reporter, VLC plays the VCD problem-free.

I submitted a bug report already.

On my G4 tower VCDs play problem free and I didn't get the unexpectly quit message.

I've got an ibook g3 and os x 10.3.2 - I have this same problem with vlc 0.7.0.

Glad to see there are others - maybe we'll get a solution!

It is a really weird problem.
I think VLC is blocking the OS so long (because it is too busy with playing) that the OS thinks VLC has crashed.

I don't see an immediate solution. I'll have to think about this.
Please share your experiences with this in detail. More information might help to give that small clue i might need.

I'm on an iMac DV 400Mhz 320Mb ram and get this happening when I play MPEG 2 files.

I click the VLC icon that I put in the dock to launch it. then I select "open disc" and choose VCD. I'm using regular VCDs like"The Wedding Singer" and Chinese VCD Movies. No matter which VCD I use in VLC, I always get the crash reporter screen about VLC unexpectly quitting and if I want to send a crash report to Apple. It happens within the first 10 seconds of viewing the VCD.

I'm only encountering this problem on my brother's iMac G3.
The specs are: G3 600 Mhz,512Mb ram, 16mb Rage 128 Ultra, MacOSX10.3.2 Panther.

My G4 tower performs problem free.
The specs for the tower are: Dual 867 Mhz G4, 1GB ram, 64 Mb Radeon 9000 pro, MacOSX 10.3.2 Panther

OK, I was vague in my post, hopefully this extra info will help.

Someone already posted a crash log, that was very similar to mine. It does seem like this specific problem may be G3 related, the people that have the G4s don't seem to have the exact same issue (they report the error upon quitting it seems). Someone looking at the crash report once told me that it was an error related to calling a G4 specific command on a G3, but I am not sure they were correct (but they may have been).

It only happens with Mpegs, and only when it is the first file played. Once I have received the error I can open another Mpeg and it will not give the error as long as I have not quit VLC since receiving the error. it does not seem to happen with avi files at all.

So - an example:
VLC is not running.
I double click on an Mpeg.
VLC pauses for a while longer than usual, and then starts playing with no picture for a moment (audio is OK and the progress indicator is moving along).
The error then comes up, and as soon as that happens the video is displayed and plays correctly.
I can then close the video (but not the program) and open another mpeg without this happening again.

I should also mention that this started happening at some point in the fall when I was running OSX 10.2 and VLC 0.6.0 (I think!)- but it worked fine originally. I have since formatted and installed 10.3 (currently 10.3.2) and it has always given the error on this install for mpegs (using VLC 0.6.2 (I think) and now with 0.7.0). Sorry I can't be sure about the old version numbers for VLC, it was a while ago and I wasn't really paying attention to it at the time.

K, so it is probably a bug in libmpeg2's altivec support.

It's weird though that VLC keeps running.

I should also mention that my iBook is the 12 inch 900 mHz G3, but my girlfriend has a 12 inch iBook G4 and it does not have this issue at all. Our computers are almost identically set up, same version of the OS, same version of VLC.

I'd also like to thank you for your work. VLC is a great player. It never seems to require a codec I don't have, and it will play files that I could never play using MS Media Player (before I moved to linux and Mac about a year ago). Just want to say thanks and not just comlpain

...but I believe that mplayer uses the same lib and it does not seem to have this issue. It is certainly weird that it keeps playing.

We do use a newer version than mplayer though.

But it cannot be an altivec issue, since people with a G4 experience the crash too.
The crashreports report a date and time. did anyone think to check that time to see wether it is the time in question of the 'Unexpectedly Quit'?

Actually the libmpeg2 person thinks it might be a threading issue with altivec detection, so maybe this may yet prove to be the problem.

Are people with a G4 experiencing this? The previous posts looked like they had the error upon exiting, which may be a different problem as I've never had it then.

The date and time of the log do indeed match when that error is displayed.

OK, i have a new test application.

This should fix the unexpectedly quit problem i think.
It also features a better altivec detection that should also work on G5 for instance it appears this was not the case So all G5 users should have a much faster build now

beware. it only works on Panther. this is because for 10.1 and 10.2 compatibility i need access to a 10.2 machine which i do not have atm.

Thank you soooooo much!!!! My iBook G3 600 can FINALLY play a movie with VLC without it quitting and churning first. OMG this was SO annoying but now it's fixed and there seriously are tears of joy!!!
