4:3 picture

Hello,
can somebody help me with this: I have a movie in 16:9 aspect ratio and I want to play it on a 4:3 monitor or TV. Not a problem. But I want to have subtitles in the black area below the picture. Some players or filters (VSFilter aka VobSub) have a possibility to add black stripes to a picture to make it 4:3 or 16:9. But I cannot find this in VLC. This is a very important future for me, as having the subtitles covering half of the picture is not a good idea if there is a big black unused space below. Did I miss this in VLC settings or the future just isn't there?
Thank you,
JeCh

This is not currently possible in VLC, it would require quite large changes to the system to, so this won't be possible anytime soon either.

Why would be adding two black stripes to a picture so difficult? As far as I know most players can do it. Wouldn't help using some code from VSFilter (VobSub) which is a subtitle directshow filter and which can do this? I'm not a programer so maybe I'm completely wrong.
Thank you,

it's not impossible, it just requires changes in VLCs core design. And noone is really interested in doing it, so it doesn't get done.
