Settings of snapshot size and file type won't stay

When I change the file type from .png to .jpg and the size of the snapshot, it doesn't seem to do anything. Even if I restart the program the defaults still stay as they were.
The program shows that I made a change IE: the file type indicates it will be a .jpg but when it makes the snapshot it's still a .PNG same thing goes for the size of the file..the numbers are there but the filesize is the same as it always was.
I even re-installed VLC but it made no difference. I have the latest version of the program and XP Pro.
