Overlapping lines of subtitles

I watch a lot of Asian shows and movies with .srt files. Often times the background music of a scene is subbed and the lyrics are displayed over the dialog for a scene. Now I notice what looks like some sort of tag, {\a6}, is in front of the music lyrics. The "answer" to fixing this looked like using the latest nightly build back in August, but I'm using VLC 0.9.8a for Mac OS X. It looks like VLC is ignoring the tag, if it is a tag. Any ideas?

Can you share the subtitle?

I'm kind of new to VLC, so is Stream FTP a function within VLC, or do you have an FTP server that I can upload the .srt file too? If yes on the server part, I've no idea how to access. If Stream FTP is a function within VLC I'm not seeing a way to access it. Thanks, and sorry for taking up your time.
