how to get video frames

Hi,
I'm developing video detection algorithms which should be able to process video from different sources (usb webcamera, IP camera, AVI file..), so I'd like to use VLC. I was looking into documentation for some time, but I haven't discovered a way to get video frames from VLC - I need to process raw image data in each frame and I have no clue how to do it..
Please, can you suggest some solution?
thanks
