VLC client connect/browse the VLC server?

I'm experimenting with VLC, and I'm a little confused
I have two VLC clients (One Windows XP , the other is an experimental MediaMVP Media Center which can also function as a VLC client. I'm also trying to setup a VLC server on my Ubuntu box.
Can the VLC client on my Windows box connect to browse the entire Audio/Video library on my Linux box, or can I only use it to play one file at a time? Can I browse my music library this way, or do I need to use a separate protocol, like SMB or NFS?
Most documentation I've seen only deals with serving one file, but I was wondering about an entire library.
Thanks all.
