Issues when playing stereo files as mono

Dear VLC team,
I'm using the VLC media player 0.9.4 Grishenko under WinXP SP2.
Since the right channel of my old 70's stereo amp is currently broken, I'm now using the left channel only.
I set the Audio Device option from the Audio menu to Mono. The problem here is that each time a new track is loaded, the media player switches back to Stereo, which sucks, of course.
How can this behavior be changed? Else, will this be fixed in a future version? A better support for mono output would be generally fine...
