Playing an MKV in 1080p

I have 1080p MKV video file on my PC and I would like to be able to play it at full 1080p resolution on my 24" 1920x1080 monitor. How do I do this? If I full screen it will it be automatically correct or will I have to change any settings.

It will be automatic if your CPU can make it.
