You need to enable the equalizer in preferences. Open preferences, select "All" under "show Settings" to open advanced view, then open audio>filters, select checkbox "Equalizer with 10 bands" That will solve your problem.

i have this problem in the latest version (0.9.6) which i updated to just minutes ago, i also experienced this problem in previous versions (0.9.4)
the solution you posted does not work, the "Equalizer with 10 bands" checkbox is checked, but the EQ resets to disabled each time a new song starts playing
i have tried both playing with the "Equalizer with 10 bands" checked and unchecked, it makes no difference
i have tried restarting the player with the "Equalizer with 10 bands" checked and unchecked, same problem
i am playing FLAC and MP3 files if that makes a difference
the preferences user interface seems to forget the state of the "show settings" radio button group (Simple / All) and resets to simple with each restart
other settings are remembered, so its not a problem with not being able to save settings
on initial startup, the EQ "enabled" checkbox is checked, but is disabled after the first song transition
