VLC vs other open source projects

Hi

VLC is a cool project... i know there are several big competitors around there, like Darwin Streaming Server, Realtimes open source Helix and Flash Red5.

Now what me interests are the pros and cons of vlc, especially vs DSS. If possible honest answers... :-)

What i think so far:

DSS
------
+ Big community
+ For high load streaming
? More ressource intensive?
- Live streaming is via an addon

Red5
------
+ Live flash streaming
+ User friendly interface overlays to videos
+ Java
- Java
- Nothing else than flash

Helix
------
Not many infos gathered yet

VLC
----
+ portability, modules
+ decent community
+ decent latency for live streaming (around 2 seconds i guess)
- Slightly buggy under windows and version jungle - which one to choose?

any input is warmly welcomed

cheers

specially vs flash interests me. I think the ease of embedding vlc into a 3rd party software is good. I'm not sure whether it's easy to embed a flash player in some 3rd party software.
