VLC Disables Sound Buttons On Laptop

My utmost apologies if this issue has already been addressed, but I've searched the forum and have heretofore not discovered evidence of such.
The 0.9.2 build seems to have, for me, a strange quirk. Whenever I attempt to either lower, increase, or mute the volume using the sound buttons on the front of my laptop nothing happens. This problem goes away whenever I have VLC in full-screen mode, but whenever it's in the default, non-full-screen mode that appears whenever I immediately start a video the buttons simply don't work. If I click outside of the VLC window, the buttons work again.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, and, if so, does anyone have a solution?
Once again, my apologies if this issue has already been addressed.
