VLC and subtitles, doesn't play very well

I have a simple question about vlc and subtitles: when vlc is running, i can push "pause" and vlc stop the movie, but whe i'm seeing a tv shows with subtitles ( i charge subtitles from other folder), i can't push "pause". Well, i push "pause" but the vlc does't stop the film. why is it? please...
have vlc has a direct access to put subtitles? somethin similar bsplayer?
