I'm using VLC trunk-20080824-0930 on Windows XP SP2 on an AMD64 X2 4600+, 2GB RAM.
When starting a certain DVD (to be exact: Any of the DVDs of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex) the aspect ratio is at first correct. But when starting an episode it changes to a value I don't know. It's even flatter than 2.21:1. When manually choosing 16:9 everything is ok - choosing Default lets VLC return to the bad aspect ratio. There is no such problem with 0.8.6i.

CloudStalker doesn't have an answer for you right now but just a temporary fix. Go to Preferences -> Video -> Scroll down to "Source aspect ratio" and input the value of 16x9. this will force all videos to fit that ratio.
