Question regarding DVD ripping.

My goal is just to rip from the DVD to the highest quality format I can (other than raw avi, I lack the disk space for that 
)
I'm wondering if choosing to save the file without specifying any of the transcoding options will just dump the input into the container type I choose or if it re-encodes by some defaults.
Probably been asked a bit here but I had no idea what terms to search for about this.
