VEODIA is based on VLC it would seem!

VEODIA is based on VLC it would seem!

Postby jpstrikesback » 05 Aug 2008 18:46

so I just started a trial run of Veodia (check it out at veodia.com) and had to download their browser plugin (3.6mb) which turned out to be a little more than a browser plug-in :)

It's essentially a remote control for a proprietary VLC run with some daemon interface (perhaps http) and likely a ton of other things axed (0.8.6 I believe).

It enables one to encode x264 video and send to RTMP (Flash) , sound like a good idea anyone? One amazing thing is it encodes video on Intel Macs as well.

Funny thing is, they allow you to download the "plugin" but their model is SaaS (Software as a service), I imagine their accompanying DLL files manage to hardcode the sout to their servers, and I bet the way they accomplish RTMP isn't via VLC but likely Wowza/Red5 ingesting RTSP and serving RTMP.

My Real Point follows:

We could do this people.

We could code a few lightweight browser plugins with simple API's that essentially start VLC with the http interface and then communicate with it and control it, VLC would become the defacto standard for easy browser-based encoding.

Anyone interested :)

If nobody get's behind this I'll just have to do it myself and have to find a way to monetize it, but if this became a priority for the community I think we'd open up a whole new eco-system for VLC.

Yes, veodia uses VLC, and yes, VLC can do the same.
We don't have time to do it, though.
