VLC connected by disconnected on Shoutcast stream?

I am currently using VLC Media Player to play MelsGarage's (www.melsgarage.com) NYPD feed.

It plays good for most of the time, except after a while it no longer gives sound 45:42:00:00 and will just sit there, never play anything and the time will not move, until I hit stop and play again.

I don't wish to use any other player because VLC seems to be the only player that you can tell it to only play the left or right audio through both speakers, which is nice for this stream because I only care to hear the NYPD (Right) not the other stuff on the left.
