vlc support for pchdtv card?

Postby johnclubvec » 02 Oct 2004 16:11

In July 2005, due to the "broadcast flag," free as in free speech hdtv would seem to be at an end in the United States (see http://www.eff.org/broadcastflag/ ). After that time, it will be illegal to purchase, or even to use, equipment that ignores this "broadcast flag." However, legacy equipment that ignores it will still be legal.

As a result, I have become interested in a linux-friendly over the air hdtv tuner card with open-source driver ( http://www.pchdtv.com/ ).

I am wondering if any vlc users or developers are interested in this news, or have any experience or interest in (for example) getting vlc -- by far my favorite media player -- to play live streams from this card, etc.

Thank you,

John Kelleher

Regular devs are swamped in work and seriously lacking in equipment. Contributions are always welcomed. Money usually doesn't work :) Patches do

vlc support for pchdtv card?

Postby johnclubvec » 16 Oct 2004 17:12

Update (edited): Does any of the following make using the card with vlc sound reasonable to people knowledgeable about vlc? Does something like the command lines below obviate the need for a patch?

I have found this: http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=80

"I have done everything necessary to get the HD card running with:

Code:
getatsc /dev/dtv 44 | vlc -Vx11 -

I get a good sound and video with vlc."

I have also found a post concerning using mplayer with the pchdtv card.

from: http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=150

"I use dtvsignal to tune the card and verify I've got the antenna positioned right. I then tell mplayer to play /dev/dtv as a normal MPEG2-TS file:

mplayer -vf pp=lb -tsprog 0 /dev/dtv

-tsprog 0 selects program 0 from the transport stream
-vf pp=lb tells mplayer to use linear-blend deinterlacing."

then you can just tell vlc to open stream:///dev/dtv
and it should work.

Update: I have installed the pchdtv card and it is working well. The way to use it with vlc turns out to be the following:

(Assuming you want to play subchannel 3 of channel 19):

getasc /dev/dtv 19 | vlc --program 3 -

Don't forget the "-" at the end of the command!

Hi All,

Does any one know how to set /reset the broadcast flag in a .ts /.tp file?

Regards
Geetha
