I would like to be able to organise my movie library better

More specifically I would like to be able to search for a movie based on Genre, Release Date, imdb User Rating, and MPAA rating as well as link to http://www.imdb.com for more detailed information.

I believe several of the video formats have support for tags but they do not seam as well supported as ID3v1, ID3v2 are for music files.

Given VideoLAN has unsurpassed native support for video files. Integrated tagging of video files would complement the product.

So my questions
Does VideoLAN currently support this?
Is it being added to the new version?
Note, I had a look in viewforum.php?f=7 but could only find information on tagging mp3 files (which other programs such as media monkey already do quiet well).

I would like the tag information stored with the movie data so any internal database can be restored if the movie file is moved or accessed from a different computer (I have my multimedia data on a file server accessed by several computers and several user accounts). Ideally the tag data would be within the video data file. VideoLAN should also have it in an internal database.

.avi has "hdrl" tag which sounds useful however I'm not so sure after looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... S.85).aspx and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... er_formats as it lacks metadata support which is probably what I'm looking for. Some of the other popular file formats appear to have better support for tags. I suspect future file formats will have better support.
Interestingly "abcAVI Tag Editor" and http://www.dancemammal.com/moviedb.htm sound as if they do the sort of thing I'm looking for.

If it is not possible to support tags within the movie file then an external file, similar to how subtitles are now handled, could be used. The .nfo usually has an imdb link which is a start (but otherwise this file is too variable to be useful).

In both instances I would imaging videoLAN would read the data into it's own internal database before it is actually used. At least that is what appears to happen with most programs using ID3 tags by comparison.

The important thing to me I suppose is the end result.

then read the review on http://www.imdb.com/ or http://au.rottentomatoes.com/ then play the movie

It would be useful to have a movie quality tag also so I can readily select by blue ray or DVDrip movie

Hopefully it could be done as an extension of the music database, rather than completely from scratch. It is essentially an "auto-tag" function for video files using imdb, analogous to using freedb or Gracenote to to auto-tag music files http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_editor
BTW Media monkey also uses Amazon to auto-tag albums, which has some similarity to VideoLAN using imdb to auto-tag movie files.

Given it is not currently supported I suspect I have posted this in the wrong forum. Could someone please move this to the Feature Requests forum.
