need proper command syntax

I have been searching google and the forums for help transcoding to a .wmv output file, which wmp can play. This is discussed in the following post (viewtopic.php?t=33222), but not enough that I am able to get it to work. Can someone provide an example of how to transcode a live capture, or a saved avi file, so a wmp can play both video and audio. I can usually get one or the other to work, but not both.

Thanks for any help on this

Do you think there is a difference between windows vlc and Linux vlc encoding? I worked for quite a while on an Ubuntu box trying to transcode a movie trailer to wmv, and couldn't get it to play with audio in a wmp. It worked the first time on a vista laptop, using the same trailer??????

OK.... I figured out the problem, but not sure how to fix it.

This is from my Ubuntu box. Can a person just use apt-get to install what is missing?
If so, what packages do I need?

ffmpeg error: cannot find encoder MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3
stream_out_transcode error: cannot find encoder ((null))
main debug: removing module "mpeg_audio"
stream_out_transcode error: cannot create audio chain
main error: cannot create packetizer output (mpga)
