sometimes it works...sometimes not

How come when i'm previewing movies, or even playing regular ones with vlc, when i first open it the audio will play, but the screen is just gray? Then I'll close it and open it over and over and eventually it will work right. I have the nimo codecs and all that, i need to know why it wont just work the first time, whats making it not show up sometimes but then it does others? I'm running windows me.
