I found now VLC, so I installed it but didnt change any settings/codecs on my PC.
So now when I play AVI with VLC, there is audio but no picture.
what should I change?

VLC uses it's own codecs so VLC is unaffected by external codecs. Do you see a black screen in the shape/size of the video? If so go to:
Settings >> Preferences... >> Video
And untick "Overlay video output". Then press "Save" and try a video.
Cheers, Arite.

First try resetting your preferences and cache files by going to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data
And delete the folder called "vlc".
Then try a video. If there is not difference then try, for example, the OpenGL video output module. To do this go to (in VLC):
Settings >> Preferences... >> Video >> Output modules
And tick the "Advanced options" tickbox. From the "Video output module" drop-down box select "OpenGL video output" and press "Save". Restart VLC and try a video.

Try some different output modules such as "Windows GDI video output" (restart VLC after change). You may also want to update you video drivers since the blank screen issue is likely to be driver-related.

Okay, I'm going to oversimplify this for the sake of completeness. Please bear with me.
1) I am having the above problem.
2) I have tried the above solutions, including:
a) trying all combinations of video output module & overlay
b) deleting my preferences
c) updating my video drivers
3) I have rejnstalled VLC
4) I have a pretty common system:
a) nvidia 8600gt chipset
b) core 2 duo
c) windows xp x64
Is there a codec i should have installed for AVI? I have looked in the VLC documentation. I have looked in the wiki. I have read the FAQs. I'm glad to do legwork, if someone can give me direction. I like that VLC plays everything...
Thanks.

As stated above VLC uses it's own codecs so you do not need to install external codecs for VLC. Did you try the OpenGL video output module and restart VLC after saving the preferences before trying a video?
how to update my video drivers?
That depend on what graphics card you have. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card go the the NVIDIA website and go the the Download Drivers page (
here). For ATI go to the ATI/AMD website etc.

*nods*. I thought so; Just making sure.

Yes. To clarify my statement above, I tried every combination of Output module and Overlay state, with a full Save > Close VLC > Reopen VLC cycle between each.
Thanks for your time!

Does this occur for all video files? If not, what are the codecs used in the problematic video files? If there is a video to output then at least, for example, the Colour ASCII art video output should work.
