no video, main error: unknown chroma type 0x59565955 (UYVY)

Hello,

I am having some particular trouble with all my video applications right now. I have recently installed VLC when I was told that it is not codec dependant, and simply put, if the file plays in VLC, then my codecs are messed up. I originally thought I had some missing or corrupted codecs, but now I'm not so sure. A while back, I had installed Avid DV express, which after some time I uninstalled it. My video acted up immediately after, and I found the problem and corrected it. Now, I am trying to play avi files that I have captured. Every video application has a glitch and either; crashes on loading the file, or will not play the file at all (sometimes I don't even get an error, when I press 'play' it immediately finished playing but never displays anything). I installed VLC, and when I run the files I either get a green video display (which I was told could be resolved by installing a proper running version of ffdshow), or a grey screen and about 1 second of audio; at which time it stops playing.

the log for the grey screen and roughly 1 sec of audio:
-------------------------
vout_directx error: never heard of chroma 0x59565955 (UYVY)
vout_directx error: never heard of chroma 0x59565955 (UYVY)
vout_directx error: cannot lock surface
main error: unknown chroma type 0x59565955 (UYVY)
main error: unknown chroma type 0x59565955 (UYVY)
main error: picture allocation failed
main error: unknown chroma type 0x59565955 (UYVY)
main error: picture allocation failed
-------------------------
the last two lines repeat itself over and over again until I stop playback, so I'm assuming that this error is for each frame in the file.

The playback screen says: "hardware YUV overlay DirectX output" in the title bar.

When I play the file that gives a green screen for playback, there are no messages logged at all.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled a working version of ffdshow, no results. The files will not play in PowerDVD, nor in WMP 9, or ATI Fileplayer. When I load up any program requiring video, it gives an error (ie: Pinnacle studio 8, adobe premiere 6.5, and even video games). Files will not load into dvd authoring software, and when they do they have the green screen. The only program where the files will play are in Sonicfoundry's Vegas 4)

I could not find anything in any forum regarding this error, in GSPOT, I recieve no errors of corrupter or missing codecs. But a question is why am I having trouble playing back YUY2 and UYVY video streams? These should not require codecs, but will still not run. I am trying to find the problem, I know it was AVID when I uninstalled it, but it did not ask to remove any excess files when I removed AVID. I recently just re-installed AVID, thinking it would replace any files/codecs it removed, but it's still nothing better. The files themselves are fine, as I captured them before I installed the first AVID, and they played in everything.

I would just like to know if there is somewhere or something that I need to reinstall to fix the problem; or I'll just format and install everything.

Thanks for your time,
