transcode: video and audio out of sync

Hi,
I am trying to transcode avi movies taken from my digital camera into mp4 files that I can play on my ipod.
The avi movies play fine in the VLC player. However, the audio in the resulting mp4 file lags the video by
roughly .5 seconds. Here is the command line that I am using to transcode:
C:/Progra~1/VideoLAN/VLC/vlc.exe -vvv "Swing Set.avi" --stop-time=30 :sout="#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=4096,fps=15,acodec=mp4a,ab=64,channels=1,audio-sync}:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,url='junk.mp4'}" vlc:quit
I've played around with the '--audio-desync=-500' option but that appears to only affect playback, not
transcoding.
I've also tried with and without the 'audio-sync' option. I see no difference with our without this option.
I've also tried various video and audio bitrates. I am using VLC media player version 0.8.6d. The system
that I am doing the transcoding on is a P4 3.2GHz system.
There has got to be a simple solution to this because I assume that others are successfully transcoding
with this software. What am I missing?
