Frame in widescreen looks grey/not black

OK my first post, I find it really distracting when the frame when in widescreen is grey (or lighter than the blacks in the film I'm watching, which gives the appearance of grey)...
Is it possible to get a true black frame - just a tweak that I would like to know as this is the best damn player out there!!!!
